Wide Angle Lenses
Wide angle lenses have a short focal length and wide field of view, enabling machine vision devices to capture more background and landscape photographers to include more of the scene in a photographic image. At Avantier, we produce custom wide angle lenses with premium build quality for machine vision and photography applications.
Applications of Wide Angle Lenses
Wide angle lenses are important for many different industries. A real estate professional may take advantage of wide angle lenses to produce pictures that make a property look spacious, and that capture more features of the space in a single shot. Landscape photographers appreciate the way that wide angle lenses allow big picture views.
But wide angle views are also important in modern factory automation, where machine vision cameras need to pull in data from a wide field of view. They are used in medical imaging and life science research. They are also key to many security applications and other machine vision applications.

Specifications of Wide Angle Lenses
A wide angle lens for a 35 mm full frame camera is defined as having a focal length of 35 mm or less, vs a 50 mm ‘normal lens’. An ultra wide angle lens is defined as one with focal length shorter than 24 mm.
Ultra-wide lenses with a focal length of 6 to 8 mm exhibit barrel distortion and are known as fisheye lenses. Between 8 and 16 mm a lens can be designed to produce rectilinear or fisheye pictures, while above 16 mm images produced will be rectilinear.
Ultra wide fisheye lenses can have a field of view of up to 180 degrees, and the image can be in clear focus throughout. To get a shallow depth of field, the working distance to the subject must be short.
Wide angle zoom lenses can be produced as prime lenses or zoom lenses. A prime lens will be cheaper and have higher image quality, but a zoom lens is more flexible.
Wide angle lenses may be produced with a lockable manual focus and iris to enable use even in high vibration environments.
Custom Wide Angle Lenses at Avantier
At Avantier we can produce custom wide angle lenses in many configurations, including wide angle low distortion lenses with built-in correction. These lenses are able to produce clear images of an entire room or factory hall, with image quality such that even details are discernible. We can also produce wide angle large-aperture low distortion lenses, with a maximum aperture of up to f/1.2 and distortion levels of less than 3%. Large aperture low distortion wide angle lenses are suitable for surveillance applications and can be used in low light, for applications such as tracking and imaging.
Rather than provide you with in-stock options, we work with you to design the ideal wide angle lens for your application, and then produce it to the highest standards. State-of-the-art manufacturing equipment means that no lens configuration is beyond our reach. Call us today to setup your initial consult or to place a custom order.
