Custom NIR  Lenses at Avantier

NIR lenses are optimized for use in the near infrared (NIR) region, from 900 nm to 1700 nm. Avantier  is a premium supplier of custom NIR lenses for clients in industry, research, medicine and defense.

How to Design an NIR lens

The NIR properties of a lens depend primarily on the substrate chosen. Popular options include  N-LAK22 Schott glass, an environmentally friendly Lanthanum crown glass, and N-SF6, a Schott dense flint glass. Other possibilities include Ge, Si, ZnSe, ZnS, ZnS , CaF2, BaF2, GaAs, and Chalcogenide.

The surface quality of an NIR lens may depend on the quality of the substrate used but is also highly dependent on the polishing method. At Avantier, we use state-of-the-art computer numerical controlled (CNC) processes to ensure our lenses will perform with high precision and minimum aberrations.

The focal lengths of NIR lenses depend on the physical design, and we can produce either fixed or manual focus custom NIR lenses, depending on your needs.

In many NIR applications performance will be improved with the addition of an antireflection (AR) coating.  We have available a wide range of coatings and  can help you select the best option for your application.

Applications of NIR lenses

NIR lenses may be used in imaging to produce clear, distinct images of even distant objects. The near infrared range is adjacent to the visible but beyond the color spectrum, meaning NIR images will appear in greyscale. NIR imaging is relatively unaffected by fog, smoke, and similar obstructions.

Near Infrared 3D sensing using NIR lasers and LEDS for time-of-flight based 3D imaging  or 3D sensing based on dot patterns from diffractive optical elements (DOE).  These imaging techniques have given NIR lenses an important function in LIDAR for autonomous vehicles, drones, and robotics, in eye tracking, iris detection, facial and gesture recognition, and in simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM).

In NIR skin therapy, NIR lenses are used to guide NIR light to heat subdermal tissue  and trigger contraction, firming, and collagen production desired by patients with loose or wrinkled skin.

Other applications of NIR lenses include fiber optics (focusing/collimating lenses), medical therapy, and expanding or focusing NIR lasers.
