What is Medical Optics?

Medical optics involves using light, in any of its many forms, for investigational imaging in medical applications. Light can be used to detect the presence of COVID in a sputum sample, or to complete a computer-guided laser refractive surgery.   • Multiphoton Microscopy uses multiple low-energy photons to excite fluorescent molecules, enabling deep tissue imaging with minimal photodamage, and is used in neuroscience, studying live tissues, and cellular dynamics.
  • Bioluminescence Imaging relies on light emitted by bioluminescent organisms or chemical reactions and is applied in preclinical research to study gene expression, infection pathways, and tumor growth.
  • Endoscopic Optical Imaging uses miniature cameras and light sources in endoscopes for internal body imaging, applied in gastroenterology (e.g., colonoscopy), respiratory tract examination, and minimally invasive surgeries.
